You may be looking at how to find a niche market for your online store, or you you may may be interested in how to find a niche for affiliate marketing products on your website. Basically your niche selection is the same process for whatever site you are managing.
Picking a niche can be difficult and confusing!
But in the years that I’ve been online, I’ve had some good ideas and also some pretty bad ideas which have turned out to be a complete waste of energy.
Don’t despair though, because some you win and some you don’t, it’s all part of the business!
What’s A Niche?
Firstly let me clarify what a niche is. A niche is a specific corner of a market that will enable you to target and market to with a good chance of success.
As an example If you wanted to make a website about ‘cycle touring‘, it’s too general a niche for you to get noticed because you’ll be up against lots of competition. But, if you were to target a niche like ‘cycle touring on a vintage bike‘ then you’ll be targeting a smaller niche with a smaller audience and less competition. People who ride vintage bikes tend to be of the older generation, so they would be your target audience. It would help matters if you were a little on the vintage side your self as you’d more easily relate to your audience. Picking a niche that you can relate to and knowledgeable about makes it so much easier to write regular posts.
The Key To A Good Niche?
The key to finding a good niche is to discover a low competition niche with a subject that people are inquiring about.
As an example I have a page on this site relating to my own Asturias AST 30 guitar, which is a high quality Japanese classical guitar made in the 80’s.
Less than 10 people a month search Google for ‘Asturias AST 30 guitar’, so it may be a low competition niche, but it certainly wouldn’t pick up a lot of traffic and therefore in my opinion it would be too small a niche to select as a market.
Interestingly though there are 55 searches a month for ‘Asturias AST 30’, which still doesn’t really make it a viable market niche.
However, if I was to go up a level I might be able to build a good niche site based on ‘Japanese acoustic guitars‘. There are currently 65 searches a month for this key word and with a bit of research there would be many other keywords that could be used as posts based around ‘Japanese acoustic guitars”, such as:
- Vintage Japanese acoustic guitars
- Repairing Japanese acoustic guitars
- Best Japanese acoustic guitars
- Playing/restoring Japanese acoustic guitars
- Japanese acoustic guitar brands
- Asturias Japanese acoustic guitars.
The list could go on and on. The site could be developed with many different posts about all the many Japanese acoustic guitars that are available and how to play and look after them.
It’s possible that each post could easily attract 10-20 monthly visitors to your site, which means that 50 posts could easily bring in 500 – 1000 site visitors a month.
OK, so these aren’t big numbers, but it’s a good start and as you grow your site there will be a snowball affect and in time you’ll have financial success.
The Good News
The good news is that at this moment in August 2015 the domain name japaneseacousticguitars.com is available at Namecheap. Which to me indicates that there are still many great domain names available for niche websites and products.
I’m absolutely sure that a good profitable web site could be built with this domain name. It would just need an interested guitar ‘nut’ to do some research on Japanese guitars and then to produce interesting blogs and possibly a forum. Affiliate guitar lessons and guitar paraphernalia could be added to the site to generate income.
But, and it’s a big BUT! To succeed with a niche site of this type you’ll really need to interested in ‘Japanese acoustic guitars’. You’ll need to be experienced in the field of acoustic guitars generally and knowledgeable about Japanese guitars in particular.
Many of your site visitors will be well versed with the aspects of this niche, so you’ll need to provide fresh perspectives and opinions. With type of niche, if you don’t know your business, your visitors will see through you and simply look elsewhere.
Visitors who come to your site and leave unsatisfied with your material, will never return. So ensure that all your content is of the highest quality.
Of course to do this sort of keyword research you’ll need to have a good keyword research tool. I can only recommend Jaaxy…Try finding some keywords yourself in the box below…
If like me, you have tried and tested a few different keyword tools, you will have noticed how expensive and confusing the results can be.

So how does a blog become popular
With millions of blogs being updated daily, it can be difficult to get noticed in the Google search.
So how does a blog become popular? To be honest the answer is quite simple, but it does take a little discipline. Most experienced bloggers recommend being consistent with your regular posts (targeting your niche) and posting only with high quality content that is current and original. This will attract more visitors, and give the blog more status and higher rankings for your target keywords.
So if you are just starting out within a niche you may find you are able to break into one of the above markets and rank higher than the established sites. But you must start small and concentrate on a narrow niche subject. You absolutely must provide quality information that’s better than your competitors and then slowly expand your niche over time.
It’s a bit like the ripple effect of a pebble dropped into a pond. Your niche is the pebble and the ripples are the ever growing content of your blog.
Take a look at this very informative Google video on how a new small blog can become popular and grow over time. It explains the process much better than I can and it’s produced by the big G to guide all of us.
I do hope that some of this post helps you find a niche for affiliate marketing on your blog. If you find this useful please share!
